Sport and Spinal Mechanics
During the last Olympics it was easy to spot the athletes that would not reach their full potential. How was it possible to know this you may ask? The answer was by looking at the movement and restriction of the sacroiliac joints and knowing the effect these restrictions would have on symmetry and function of the rib cage.
When researching the book on synergetic spinal mechanics the forces that cause spinal movement were unravelled and this made it possible to accurately predict how sacroiliac, spinal and ribs joints become locked. From this, it was then possible to accurately calculate the changes that would occur to the symmetry of the vertebral spine, rib cage cage and shoulders.
Two very distinct patterns of posture dysfunction became apparent based on how L3 becomes locked. Both posture dysfunction types put stresses on the rib cage and cause the rib cage to distort as shown above in the illustrations. Some ribs can become so locked that they restrict the movement of individual ribs.
The diaphragm attaches to the lower ribs and vertebrae and these distort in both patterns. This has serious implications for this vital breathing muscle as it will not be able to work at its most efficient.
To the man or woman in the street this may not matter too much (other than to their general health) but when a sports person competes against other supper fit athletes, stamina becomes vital and any short comings become very apparent in the mid to later stages of an event.
The two illustrations above show the rib pattern distortions that commonly take place. They may look extreme but they are not. These curves are seen regularly in every day life. Athletes may have bulging muscles but if their sacroiliac joints are out of alignment and immobile then their rib cage will in all likelihood look very much like the above.
Sadly research published to date has shown that conventional manipulation of the sacroiliac joint has not been effective in realigning this complicated joint. Improving muscle tone combined with exercises is even less likely to yield best results because the type of locking the sacroiliac joints endure is constantly being reinforced by weight bearing. That is why a new type of effective manipulation was needed to solve this dilemma.
With the exciting discoveries made in synergetic spinal mechanics we now have a plausible
explanation for why the currently practiced HVT and short lever manipulative techniques
have been unable to fully re-
Ongoing research has found that using PPT manipulation the realignment of the spine and rib cage can be improved significantly.
